A Working Mom’s Journey: Loving Our Families While Remembering Ourselves

Hi friends,
I’m Dr. Salimah Jones—a proud mom of four, a wife, and a woman who knows first-hand the beautiful chaos that comes with balancing work, motherhood, and everything in between.

I have two older children, ages 23 and 19, and two younger ones who are 9 and 6. Sometimes I’ll be scrolling through old pictures of my older kids when they were the same ages as my younger two, and my heart just stops. I can hardly believe how quickly the years have flown by. The gap in ages gives me such a unique perspective: I’ve lived through those seasons once already, and now I’m living them again—with a little more wisdom, a little more grace, but still plenty of emotion.

The Balancing Act of Motherhood

As moms, we want to give our kids everything. We want to love them, protect them, show up at every game, recital, and classroom party. But the truth is—we can’t be everywhere at once. That realization can feel heavy, but it’s also freeing. Our kids don’t need us to be perfect; they need us to be present.

The extra hugs before bed, the laughs over dinner, the road trips, the silly conversations—those are the things that stay in their hearts forever. As moms, we’re memory makers, whether we realize it or not.

Don’t Forget About You

If you’re like me, you’ve probably put your own needs on the back burner more times than you can count. Making sure your kids are healthy, fed, and feeling confident often takes priority. But here’s the truth I’ve had to remind myself of again and again: when we forget about our own health, energy, and well-being, we can’t give our best to the people we love.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m guilty of this too. But as I’ve learned in both my personal life and my practice, prioritizing your health isn’t selfish—it’s essential.

Seasons Don’t Last Forever

One thing I want to encourage you with today is this: every season doesn’t last forever. The sleepless nights with toddlers eventually fade. The school drop-offs and extracurriculars eventually slow down. Your kids won’t be this little forever.

So give those extra hugs. Be present for the small moments. And while you’re loving on your family, don’t forget to love yourself too.
